About Exibition
We first encountered Osamu Dazai's work, "Schoolgirl," in the summer of 2018.
After seeing the first performance of Doukyusei., 🐕 said, "Why don't we make a performance based on Osamu Dazai's 'Schoolgirl'?" This was the beginning of this project.
Afterwards, in the course of researching for the creation, we learned that "Schoolgirl" was based on the diary of a woman named Shizuko Ariake, and that Osamu Dazai created only the first few lines and the last few lines of the original piece.
We Doukyusei. take pride in placing women at the center of its work.
That we, saw no necessity for us to cut up text of Ariake Shizuko’s diary or “Schoolgirl” to create our performance in the present day again, as it was done in the past.
So we concluded to stop creating.
After a lapse of time, in the summer of 2021, we decided to face "Schoolgirl" once again.
Why was the diary stolen? What made us angry?
Through our research, we would like to clarify the whole picture, and from there, we would like to start a further dialogue.
*Depending on the type of flyer being distributed, it may be written as "2019 Summer," but The correct name is "2018 Summer."

These are the words that we cherish in this exhibition.
These words are the "center" of this exhibition.
We, together with everyone who came to the exhibition, including ourselves, want to give shape to the sense of discomfort that was about to be forgotten. We start from the point where we can see, touch, and give shape to what was only in our minds and common understanding at that time.
We hope that we will be able to go on with our lives as we wish, with our own sense of satisfaction.
Shizuko Ariake
She was born in Tokyo in 1919 as the second daughter of microbiologist Ariake Bunkichi.
In 1938, she sent a notebook containing three months' worth of diary to Osamu Dazai's house.
The following year, his work ”Schoolgirl“, a reconstruction of her diary, was published under Dazai's name.
Later, she married a military doctor and has two children, but her first son and husband died. She raised her second son while working.
She died in 1981.
"Sizu Ariake" and "Shizuko Ariake"
In many documents and in "Material Collection No.1 Diary of Ariake Shizu" (Aomori Museum of Modern Literature, 2000), her real name is Ariake Shizu and her common name is Ariake Shizuko.
However, we Doukyusei. have decided to call Ariake Shizu as "Ariake Shizuko". This is because Ariake Shizuko herself, who sent the diary, wrote her name as "Shizuko". Dazai Osamu and his spouse, Tsushima Michiko, also wrote "Shizuko-sama" and "S-ko-san," indicating that Ariake Shizuko referred to herself as "Shizuko".

About Place
The venue for this exhibition is a building located in a place where brothels used to stand side by side, and was once commonly known as "Chon-no-Ma.
Just a few decades ago, in this place, sexual services were offered in exchange for money ranging from a few thousand yen to 10,000 yen in a time period of less than 20 minutes.
Many sex stores still stand across the river from this place that has been purified.
We will hold our exhibition in a place where the structure of the building from those days still remains.
We eat, sleep, shower, dry our hair, and chat about how life must have been like in the past. We were chatting with each other, feeling the past.
We completed them one by one.

An exhibition about Shizuko Ariake and her diary will be held.
In addition to a research-based exhibition filled with the handwork of the members of Doukyusei., a dance video created while deeply reading the diary written by Shizuko Ariake will be screened and the creative process of the dance will be exhibited. There will be a space for visitors to relax and enjoy after viewing the exhibition.

After viewing the exhibition, participants will move their bodies slowly and make small crafts.
We will also have a chat over tea and snacks.

Doukyusei.
We create works with the aim of creating tangible representations of the lives of women of various ages and living in various places. We are open to any form of expression, as long as the project is centered on women, and women who are interested in each project and Doukyusei. and come together will participate in the production of the work.
